Celebrating Easter with Preschoolers

Easter is such a joyous time for Christians as we celebrate how very much God loves us. John 3:16 says that God loved the world so much that He sacrificed His one and only Son so that anyone who believes in Him can have eternal life. That is joyful news!

As you think about sharing Easter with your preschooler, realize that the full meaning of Easter may be confusing to his young mind. Your child’s full understanding of Easter will come at a later time his life. So how do you celebrate this special season with your preschooler now? As parents you can lay some important foundations in the life of your child. As you talk with your child about Easter, focus on Jesus’ love for each of us.

Consider the influence of secular celebrations often connected with Easter. Are these activities, experiences, objects reflective of Jesus’ love for us? Do they point your child to the Bible? We don’t want children to confuse the fantasy of bunnies and eggs with the truths of the Bible. At church and home it is important to avoid mixing the traditional images of the Easter bunny with the truths of the Bible. Springtime egg hunts are great as family activities, but they should remain separate from Bible teaching.

This year celebrate Easter with an emphasis on Jesus and know that, in focusing on Him, you are building foundations of faith in your child.
